Foot pain is a common patient complaint, with many possible causes. The most common cause is Plantar Fasciitis, which may be experienced by foot pain in the morning when getting out of bed. Heel spurs are also a common complaint. Heel spurs are abnormal growths of bone on the bottom of the heel bone that may be caused by an abnormal gait, posture or walking, inappropriate shoes, or certain activities. People with flat feet or high arches are more likely to have foot pain from heel spurs.
A fracture of the heel bone (calcaneus) may also cause foot pain. Heel bone fractures are often caused by high impact to the heel. Injuries can range from a bone crack from exercise, to a shattered bone resulting from a fall. Heel pain, bruising, swelling, limping, or difficulty walking are the main symptoms of heel bone fractures.
Metatarsalgia is pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. Strenuous activity or ill-fitting shoes are the usual causes.
Fallen arches, or flat feet, occurs when the arches of the feet flatten out, which causes foot pain and other problems.
Arthritis, including gout, can cause pain in the toes. Gout is an inflammatory condition in which crystals periodically deposit in joints, causing severe pain and swelling. The big toe is often affected by gout.
Acupuncture is used to treat pain, inflammation and other uncomfortable symptoms resulting from foot pain. Patients who receive acupuncture to alleviate foot pain will express that their acupuncture treatments have allowed for a significant reduction in pain levels and consumption of significantly fewer over-the-counter medications. Acute foot pain can often be cleared up in a few sessions and more treatments may be needed if there is a more serious condition. Regardless of whether your foot pain has been occurring for a few days or for many years, acupuncture can provide a safe and effective treatment solution for you.
