Also referred to as cervical pain, neck pain is a common condition that can range from mild annoyance to severely debilitating. Because of the range of motion that the neck routinely encounters, and because it plays the vital role of supporting the head, the neck is subject to more injury than any other portion of the spine.
Neck pain can have a variety of different causes. It can be caused by sudden force (such as an automobile accident, which frequently causes whiplash and sports trauma), or by a medical condition which causes swelling and inflammation. Other examples of common conditions which may cause neck pain are:
-Degenerative disc disease
Neck pain may also come from common infections, such as virus infection of the throat, leading to lymph gland swelling and neck pain. Neck pain may also come from rare infections, such as tuberculosis of the neck and bone infection of the spine in the neck (osteomyelitis and septic discitis) and meningitis.
Some everyday common causes of neck pain include an holding an awkward position for long hours, prolonged computer use, repetitive tasks with upper extremities and/or an incorrect sleeping position. This causes your neck muscles to fatigue and the joints in your neck to “lock” in place, causing discomfort, stiffness and limited range of motion.
Studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in relieving various types of neck pain. In many cases, acupuncture has worked for patients whose conditions could not be solved using conventional approaches. Acute neck pain can often be cleared up in a few sessions and more treatments may be needed if there is a more serious condition. Regardless of whether your neck pain has been bothering you for a few days or for many years, acupuncture can provide a safe and effective treatment solution for you.*
